Summary
Reporting to the Director, R&D Drivetrain Technology for Global Power Tools, the Senior Bevel Gear Engineer will be located in Lexington, SC. This role will be key in growing existing bevel gear capabilities at ATG Lexington into a center of excellence for bevel gear design and manufacture. This position is a key member of the R&D team, as gears are the core of our products. The Senior Bevel Gear Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and implementing optimal bevel gear sets for each power tool application. This role coordinates with manufacturing and mechanical engineering and integrates their inputs to produce all the documentation to completely define the design and manufacturing settings for the product. The Senior Bevel Gear Engineer researches and keeps up to date with the latest technologies in bevel gear design and manufacture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to design bevel gear sets with Gleason (Cage/Gage) software. Perform unloaded and loaded tooth contact analysis
  • Research areas for future breakthrough opportunities in the areas of bevel gear design and manufacture
  • Interpret bevel gear prints including dimensions, GD&T and specifications
  • Oversee generation of bevel gear drawings within Creo 2D & 3D format. Delivers all documents needed to completely define bevel gears and related parts
  • Provide layout and design information to mechanical department for generating bevel gear housing and related drawings
  • Perform bearing calculations and selections
  • Specify gear testing programs and lead prototype builds and complete test reports
  • Investigate and resolve issues associated with non-conforming bevel gear sets from testing or customer returns
  • Lead corrective action processes for bevel gear lab and field failures
  • Work closely with manufacturing and manufacturing engineering to establish bevel gear manufacturing excellence for ATG
  • May require travel both locally and internally

Preferred Skills:

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience within bevel gear design including 3 or more years of manufacturing experience in bevel gear machining and/or assembly AND 3 or more years’ experience with Gleason (Cage/Gage) software
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD (Creo preferred)
  • Deep understanding of gear steels and heat / surface treatment
  • Expert in GD&T, Mistake Proofing and Problem Solving Techniques and Gear measuring (GMM)
  • Working knowledge of KISSsoft software preferred
  • Gleason Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) and Tooth Contact Analysis Under Load (LTCA) software experience preferred
