Reporting to the Director, Global R&D Powertrain, the Gear Engineer will be located in Lexington, SC. This role will develop mechanical components for new and existing products with specific focus on gears and transmissions. This position is a key member of the Product Development team, as gears are the core of our products. It could require travel both externally for supplier and customer visits and internally to collaborate with the global team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gear ratio and strength calculations
  • Bearing load calculations and bearing selection
  • Designs, develops, analyzes and documents powertrain layouts, components and assemblies which meet the functional, cost, reliability and manufacturability requirements. Delivers all documents needed to completely define planetary and bevel gears and related parts.
  • Specify gear testing programs and lead prototype builds and oversee testing and analyze test results
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Travel required, up to 5%

Preferred Skills:

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering degree preferred and 3+ years of experience in gear design; OR Master's Degree in Gear Engineering and 0+ years of experience3+ years of experience in gear design
  • Ability to correctly use standard test and measurement equipment to quantify designs
  • Proficient in 3D CAD (Creo 3.0 preferred), GD&T and tolerance stack analysis
  • Minimum 3 years’ recent full time experience with KISSsoft or equivalent gear software package, in lieu of this experience we will consider a candidate with a Master's Degree in Gear Engineering.
  • Collaboration with outside suppliers and internal manufacturing regarding gear manufacture.
  • Root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, DFMEA preferred
  • Engineering Analysis software (FEA, kinematics) preferred
